In 1993, the Carnegie Council on Adolescent Development
published a report entitled, “A Matter of Time: Risk and
Opportunity in Non-School Hours.” The Carnegie report found
that adolescents lacking constructive, positive guidance during
non-school hours, were much more likely to engage in high-risk
behavior than others. Young teens who failed to participate in
activities designed to meet their unique needs, faced
significantly higher risks of becoming involved in substance
abuse, sexual activities, crime, and violence. Those risks
according to the report, are even higher for minorities and
those from low income areas because the host of economic and
social disadvantages serve to exacerbate missing social
structures that often provide safe havens, attractive
opportunities, and trustworthy guidance.
-
During the critical transition from youth to adulthood, teens
often develop the skills, attitudes, and behaviors that will
substantially affect their ability to lead productive, quality
lives. Mentoring has been widely noted for its potential to
positively effect adolescents during this critical transition
period. To address the aforementioned issues, Phi Rho Eta
Fraternity, Inc. created a program specifically designed to
cultivate youth through the host of social ills they are forced
to deal with everyday.

Mentor Teacher Brother™ is the polestar community development
program of Phi Rho Eta Fraternity, Inc.. As the name
illustrates, MTB™ revolves around the core concepts of
mentorship, learning, and brotherhood. The program is designed
to cultivate positive principles and attributes through one on
one interaction, group learning, and unity. Facilitated by Phi
Rho Eta Fraternity, Inc. (the nation’s only predominately
African-American Fraternity recognized as a charitable
organization) MTB™ benefits from a massive support network
comprised of men committed in purpose and action to uplifting
others, especially young African American men. Like Phi Rho Eta
Fraternity, Inc., MTB™ is designed to withstand the test of
time. And given the charitable structure of Phi Rho Eta
Fraternity, Inc., MTB™ participants also benefit from the host
of public grants explicitly created to support mentoring
programs of this nature.
-
Through MTB™, members of Phi Rho Eta Fraternity, Inc. are able
to further the ultimate goal of the Fraternity by modeling
positive ethically grounded behavior, and instilling the
Cardinal principles of Pride, respect, and Excellence. Simply
put, MTB™ provides an unparalleled environment for young
African American males to grow. By fostering long-lasting
relationships, exceptional leadership skill, and positive
attributes, MTB™ enables adolescents to bloom into positive,
standard setting adults.

Established on August 22, 1994, Phi Rho Eta Fraternity, Inc. is
one of the nation’s leading community development
organizations. The only organization of its kind to be
officially recognized by the United States government as a
charitable organization, the primary goal of Phi Rho Eta
Fraternity, Inc. is to transform the plight of African-Americans
everywhere. Each member volunteers, at the very least, 100 hours
of community service per year. The Gamma chapter alone has given
nearly 4,000 hours of service in approximately four years.
-
One of the Fraternity’s primary national community development
programs is Mentor, Teacher, Brother (MTB). MTB is a mentorship
program facilitated by Phi Rho Eta Fraternity, Inc. that is
designed to groom young African American males into strong
African American men by teaching them the necessity of important
standard setting principles such as academic success, integrity,
responsibility, achievement, and charismatic behavior.
-
The program is facilitated through a group setting, wherein the
individualized interactions will actualize the ultimate vision
of MTB. The groups meet every week, wherein we will discuss
specific issues in accordance with the needs of the groups.
